Look back one hundred years, even before Oklahoma became a state,
and it was then that the first meetings of FBC Newcastle took place.
The congregation met under a brush arbor just one mile east of the
corner of Fox Lane and Main Street, later moving services to the
Clopton School. It was in these first meetings that the church
was organized as Newcastle Missionary Baptist Church. There
were nine charter members. The church grew and prospered, and in
1907 a new building was completed a mile south and one mile east of
Fox Lane and Main Street. The land was donated by Mrs. E.A.
Foster Sr. The work on the building was done by the members,
funded largely by Mr. Charley Huckaby.
In 1909, a parsonage was built next to the church. E.N.
Campbell was called as part-time pastor and remained for ten years.
Pastor Campbell was recalled as saying he often had to stand still
when he preached from the pulpit because of the little children
asleep on quilts in the aisles. Roy Roundtree was the song
leader at the time.
In 1917, a storm destroyed the church building, and once again
the people met in a school building and under a brush arbor,
continuing this way through World War I.
Reverend Ward was one of the pastors during the war years, and
some remember his frequent request of the hymn "Onward Christian
Soldiers" because many young men were away at war.
It is difficult for today's generation to imagine, but church
services have not always been a certainty. Few of us are
familiar with the physical hindrances of early churchgoers.
There were no paved roads, no highways, just trails. In bad
weather the local people could not get out to walk or drive their
teams of horses to church.
In 1948, the church was located at the Northwest corner of Fox
Lane and Main street, and relocated to its present location in 1978.
From the church's beginning until 1982, approximately thirty pastors
have served at First Baptist Church Newcastle.
In January 1983, FBC called Reverend Bill Gentry along with wife
Sandra and boys Chris, Scott, and David. Under his leadership,
the church completed debt-free the next phases of building, which
included an additional education facility and the present
auditorium. While serving almost twenty years, Brother Gentry
led the church to experience extended growth, begin new ministries,
and acquire full-time staff in the areas of children, youth, and
music. He retired in the fall of 2002, and currently remains a
member of FBC Newcastle.
After Brother Bill's retirement, Jim Prock served as interim
pastor until March 2003, when the church called Brent A. Parsons,
along with wife Keely and son Hunter. In October 2004,
daughter Hattie was born. Brother Brent continues to challenge
our church with a vision for the future, seeing great potential for
the kingdom in our thriving community. Through his leadership,
we have formed a Living the Vision ministry team, which includes,
not only our salaried staff, but also lay people as well. We
look forward to an exciting future serving the Lord.
Currently serving alongside Brent are Dave Watson, Minister of
Music; Troy Hoffman, Minister to Senior Adults; Beau Hague, Youth
Minister; and Ronda Pinkerton, Children's Director. |
